Everyone knows you can't improve your solar setup more than 100%

Special Agent Harold Vance adjusted his tie as he pulled into the driveway of 1427 Sunridge Lane. The IRS had flagged this address for an audit, and Harold was skeptical. For eleven years, homeowner Calvin Reed had claimed a 10% annual efficiency improvement on his solar setup. "Impossible," Harold muttered, flipping through the file. "You can't improve something past 100% of the original. This guy's either a genius or a fraud."

Calvin greeted Harold at the door, a wiry man in his late forties with a sun-weathered grin. "Agent Vance? Come on in. Want to see the setup?" His enthusiasm was disarming, but Harold kept his guard up. He followed Calvin through the modest house to the backyard, expecting a few solar panels and some creative accounting.

Instead, he found a technological marvel. Rows of sleek, custom-built solar panels glinted in the sun, paired with mirrors that tracked the sun’s arc with eerie precision. A faint hum emanated from a shed, where Calvin revealed a bank of next-generation batteries and a control system that looked like it belonged in a sci-fi movie. "This is my setup," Calvin said proudly. "I’ve been tweaking it for years. Started with a basic 5kW system, but it’s way beyond that now."

Harold raised an eyebrow. "Your filings claim 10% improvement annually. That’s… mathematically dubious after a decade."

Calvin chuckled. "I claim 10% for tax purposes—keeps things simple. Truth is, I’ve been hitting closer to 50% efficiency gains per year. Compounding, you know? Better materials, optimized angles, custom inverters. I could claim more, but the IRS gets twitchy."

Harold’s skepticism deepened. "Fifty percent? Per year? Prove it."

Calvin led him to a digital display showing real-time output: 250 kW, enough to power his home ten times over. "I’m not just running the house," Calvin said. "Follow me."

In the backyard, Calvin pointed to a series of insulated pipes buried meters deep. "Air separator," he explained. "I’m using excess power to split air into cryogenic gases—nitrogen, oxygen, argon. Nonflammable, stored in insulated tanks to minimize frost buildup. I sell the gases to local labs." Harold peered at the ground, noticing faint wisps of vapor where the insulation wasn’t perfect.

"Now, the front yard," Calvin said, leading him around. The lawn was oddly barren, just patches of sand. "I dump excess heat here. The sand’s so hot it’s nearly molten by evening. Keeps the system efficient." Harold knelt, feeling the warmth through his shoes. This wasn’t just a hobby project—this was revolutionary.

Harold spent hours documenting the setup, his initial disbelief giving way to awe. Calvin’s system was leaps beyond anything he’d seen, even in federal research labs. He recorded a video for his report, capturing the panels, the humming shed, and Calvin explaining his tweaks with infectious passion. "I just wanted to see how far I could push it," Calvin said, shrugging.

Back at the IRS, Harold filed his report, attaching the video. Somehow, it leaked. Within days, the clip went viral on X, racking up millions of views. “Solar Guy’s Insane Setup!” screamed headlines. Engineers and scientists flooded Calvin’s inbox, marveling at his innovations. Donations poured in, along with suggestions from experts to refine his system further.

Calvin didn’t stop there. With the funds, he bought a nearby junkyard for $150,000, a polluted eyesore leaking oil into the groundwater. He cleaned it up and built a scaled-up version of his system, incorporating expert tweaks for even greater efficiency. Soon, he was supplying free power, heat, and purified water to his entire neighborhood. His setup became a model for sustainable energy, shared openly on X and studied worldwide.

The public adored him. Month after month, his popularity soared. Petitions circulated, and by the next election cycle, Calvin’s name was everywhere. When the President nominated him as Secretary of Energy, it felt inevitable. At his swearing-in, Calvin grinned at the crowd. "I just wanted to tinker with some panels," he said. "Guess we’re tinkering with the future now."
