| THE WHATE HOUSE IN INNSMOUTH PROLOGUE In 1909, I am a police officer in Innsmouth and Eric Vandal. I go by the name of Jake Johnson. I answered the phone in the police station the voice on the other end said,"There's a body..." Thunder most violently crashed and exploded, the window in the police station lit up with its brilliance. "What did you say?" I asked as I listened to his voice saying this to me. "A body on a fence,..." "I see a body, Where?" I asked as I struggled to hear his voice more clearly. "A fence." "On a fence, Where?" "The barbs at Dun..." "Dun and what?" I asked praying I could hear the next word from him. "And Burrows," the voice said. "Are you standing in a police call box?" I asked as I tried to grab my pistol and trench coat. "Yes!" "Stay there?" Thunder roared and lightning flashed illinumating the street. The voice broke up every second word. I had to hold onto the phone to be able to hear the voice on the phone as it spoke. The voice sounded like a man's voice on the line. The stormy night intensifies as we rush to the scene,. I found a man dressed in a business suit, smoking a cigar. He looked into my eyes and said,"Well. Can I leave now. I am partially drowned thanks to you." He ground his gloved hands into his pockets. "Where's this body?" I asked, looking around for the body I expected on the street, but it was dangling from the fence top, held there by its spikes that made up its top. A young man tried to jump the fence, that surrounded the Whate estate. His death appears accidental, but the mention of the Whate name—known for its dark history—provokes unease. They learn he was a reporter investigating the estate’s current owner claims to be renovating the mansion, but his secretive behavior raises suspicions. Johnson and Vandal decide to investigate further. The officers visit the Whate estate and meet Daniel Whate, the charismatic leader. He dismisses any connection to the dead reporter. However, Johnson and Vandal notice strange symbols on the walls and overhear disturbing chants. Their investigation deepens, and there were missing women on May 31 and October 31 as well these women would vanish on these two days. There have been rumors of other odd things happening on the estate. They suspect Mr Whate is involved in something more sinister, there are rumors that Whate has a coven. Despite warnings from local authorities to leave it alone, Johnson’s curiosity drives him back to Innsmouth. Johnson is now convinced that Whate is involved in the black arts. Doing dark rituals to summon otherworldly entities. As Waverly and his followers chant, Johnson fights through madness-inducing visions before they are killed by Whate and his coven. Together, they disrupt the ceremony by setting fire to the building. In the chaos, Johnson and Vandal narrowly escape as the others don’t emerge from collapsing walls. The fire consumes the mansion, leaving only ruins behind. With no bodies found among the wreckage, it as if Mr. Whate and his coven have either perished or vanished into another realm. The traumatic experience haunts both men; Vandal considers leaving Arkham for good while Johnson struggles with nightmares and questions about what he witnessed. The case remains officially unsolved, but Johnson has no doubt about what truly happened at the Whate estate—a brush with horrors beyond human understanding that almost cost them their lives. s |
