The veil descends
The darkness prevails
Dark shadows hide
What eyes do not wish to see
A gentle mist glides along the cobblestones
Encroaching upon doorways and alleyways alike
Transparent and eerily quiet
Ghostly without form
Candles flicker in windowsills
Guttering weak, sparking bright
Fighting off the darkness from within
Protecting those not game to venture outside this night
Cats yowl and cry, looking for a fight
Bin lids fall from their scavenging ways
Rats scurry along with the mist
Taking comfort in its shroud of protection
The old man stumbles, trips upon drunken feet
Scattering all in his wake
Searching for home but finding none
A lost soul for the night to take
The moon shines bright behind the clouds
Bathing him in soft and filtering light
He drops to his knees, eyes brimming with tears
And begs for his life to take flight
But another night passes another dawn rises
The cats and mice scamper away
The candles burn out
The mist dissipates to hide
And the old man lives to suffer another day.
