Flash Fiction

Dad Talk

“I’m gonna catch the rabbit today!” Andy said, excited.

“What makes you think so,” his father said, “you’ve tried every method you’ve heard about. So far, every plan and trap, and they still all get away. And… why are you so determined to catch a rabbit anyway?”

They’re fluffy and beautiful. A dog and a cat put together, but with jumping, like a frog! They’re magic!

“Well, what is it this time, another plan or another trap?

“I’m going to pretend I’m a rabbit! I’m going to wear my fluffy coat and tape straws to my ears so they look big…”

“Ah…

“And I’ll climb onto that branch on the tree you cut down last week, and pretend I’m a rabbit! I can trap him. I can hop really good you know. I’ve been practicing.”

“But you’re so big…”

“Well, the Easter Bunny has to be big to carry around all that candy, I’ll be like his brother! I’ll tie a knot around my pillow case, like I was taking it to a place where it is Easter.”

“Easter is on the same day for everybody, Honey, no matter where you live…”

“Really? So, it won’t be easter anywhere till April?”

“Afraid not. Maybe the rabbits know that, and then you would just scare him…”

“Oh, well maybe I’ll wait till Easter then…” he walked away, still planning…

“How do you get in these conversations with him so easily?” Andy’s mother said from her eavesdropping at the doorway.

“It’s easy, my mind worked the same way when I was that age.”

“I’m glad to hear that, did you finally just grow out of it?”

“Actually, I just stopped telling people my thoughts out loud…”

“Are you kidding?”

“Apparently I transferred my thinking process into Andy’s head.” Dad laughed.

Mom didn’t…
