Flash Fiction

Flitters

Out for my required daily walk. Well, not required exactly, but my doctor told me if I wasn’t ready to walk every day, I might be wise enough to buy a comfortable rocking chair since I’d be spending a lot of time sitting. That worked.

So daily (most days…) I walk at the local park. I drive over and back (mostly because on my way back I can stop at the ice cream shop…)

Anyway, that day I decided to take the bridge path. It was longer but I loved going over the bridge, and just beyond it there was a rocky hill where you can sit on a rock and watch the stream flow by. It reminded me of my youth. Except in my youth the stream was a swamp, and the hill was just a rock. I daydreamed there all the time.

Anyway, as I sat on my rock, a cloud of tiny flying somethings suddenly flew by, looking like a small cloud. I heard a funny noise first, and suddenly there they were
right next to my head! I jumped up and swatted them away. And the left quickly, after all I was like a giant to them. But as I was watching the tiny cloud of flying somethings fly away, suddenly I felt something moving on both my ears! Yikes! I immediately brushed them away, and apparently several from my hair too, and this little clump of flying things gathered and flew away too, but in a different direction!

To this day, every time I go there, I look for them. I wonder if they found each other again, or maybe the second set started a new colony. I still have no idea what they were, I just call them flitters. And it makes me happy.
