Newlyweds appear to be related 300-word flash

Seeing is not Always Believing

“You’ll never believe what I found,” Daniel said to his new bride, Sylvia.
“What on earth are you up to now?”

In her head, she had begun to wonder about her bridegroom. Granted, they hadn’t known each other very long, in fact it was a whirlwind romance. But her love for Daniel made her say yes to his proposal after only a month.
Just recently, she’d noticed changes in his attitude toward her. He’d taken to locking himself in his home office for hours. He would never talk about what he was doing and kept his laptop in a filing cabinet with a combination lock on it.
But today, it seemed like he was ready to show her and tell after all. He showed her a sheaf of computer printed pages.
“What is this?” she asked.
“My family tree. Something I’ve been working on for a while.”
“What did you find?”
“We’ll have to get either a divorce or an annulment.”
“What! Why?”
“We’re related.”
Silvia stood with her mouth open.

“You’re my sister. My mother had you just after me. My parents couldn’t raise two so close together. My father wanted to keep me and my mother wanted to keep him, so she put you up for adoption. You did know you were adopted, right?”
Silvia nodded silently. Her joy crumbled.
“If I had known, I would have welcomed you simply as a sister!” He slipped off his wedding band and dropped it on the desk. She did the same with hers. Then she packed and left.

As she was going past the office, she heard Daniel on the phone.
“It worked like you said it would, Angie.”
Silvia pulled out her gun and crept to the door. Without opening it, she ended him.
