In memory of my grandfather
If heaven was a ballpark
it would have perfect grass
and freshly raked dirt.

The weather would always be warm.
Every day would have
a double header
so that there could be a good mix
of sunny afternoons
and balmy, stadium-lit nights.

Hot dogs would be long and plump
and cheap with all the fixings.
The smell of popcorn and peanuts
would lightly scent the air.

Jesus would run the ticket office.
Tickets would be complimentary upon request
because God, the commissioner,
wants everyone to have a good seat.

Every fan would get a pennant
except on special days,
when gloves and hats
would be the prize.

Some angels would sing at the opening,
some would call the game,
and others be on the field.
Names like the Halos, the Chariots,
and of course, the Cubs
would be emblazoned on
brightly colored uniforms
and light up the score board.

And today, if heaven was a ballpark,
a new smile would be in the stands,
a new voice would be there to cheer and whistle,
and a new hand would reach for that pop fly,
because today, my grandfather went to see a game.

--I love you, Grandpa. I am sure you'll be throwing the first pitch, you were that great of a man. Hope your team wins. We miss you.
