Linda needed to find a way to communicate her feelings to Jaxon. |
Linda took Jaxon's hand again as they walked along the sand. She couldn't believe the way he had looked at her; most people barely noticed her at all. She hoped he would kiss her again - but not too soon, it was almost too much to bear. He gripped her hand a little tighter, then stopped and took her other hand as well. "I do love you", he said as he looked hard at her again, "you've got to believe me." Linda could only nod, and try to convey her feelings in her eyes. Saying the words wouldn't have the same effect; she'd seen it in others' eyes, the puzzlement and the surprise when they heard her voice. She talked with Jaxon, of course, but still didn't want to risk seeing that look in his eyes at this special time, it would ruin everything. The couple walked on, arms around each other now. Linda watched the waves rippling up the beach, and wondered what they sounded like to Jaxon. She watched the line of foam, with the bubbles collecting and popping, and then soaking into the sand as the water retreated. Then she had an idea! Letting go of Jaxon, she ran up the beach and found a stick at the high tide mark. She ran back to where the sand was wet, and standing with her back to Jaxon, wrote in the sand. Jaxon stood where she had left him, knowing it was useless to call and ask her what she was doing. Then she ran back to him, and dragged him up to the writing. He stood and looked at the huge letters that said "I love you". Then he looked at Linda. "It's lovely of you to write it for me, but it'll be washed away soon. Why don't you say it to me?" He had been a bit hurt at her silence, her apparent lack of response. Then it came to him. "Speak to me!" he commanded her. "I love to hear your voice, even if you have never heard it!" She stared at him, amazed, too overcome to even think about talking. So he took her by the hand and walked along the beach with her, while the waves washed away the words in the sand, the words that she would be able to say once the tears of relief were over. ### Written for the really great competition
