Silence

Deafening, defying sound
disguised as tranquility,
the silence surrounds
succinctly at once,
then settles in
and stymies thoughts.

Calming, comforting quiescence
coming on a whim,
wonderful whisks of nothingness
nibbles at my ears
before clamping canines
into my lobes.

Biting, boisterous,
bombastic silence,
beautiful beneath a deceitful visage,
the silence now irritates,
infuriates, inflicts injury,
no longer innocuous.

The sudden silence,
my former salve,
sends me scampering,
seeking the sound
of successive salvoes
