:) The strange, the obscure... The Englyn Milwr.... The Englyn Milwr, aka the soldier's Englyn, is actually one of eight types of forms referred to as Englyn. It is believed to be several hundred (quite possible 1500 or more!) years old with its origins in Wales and Cornwall. Usually a short poem, it is comprised of rhyming triplets. Each line consists of only seven syllables thus making a poem that would look like this: seven syllables A seven syllables A seven syllables A seven syllables B seven syllables B seven syllables B seven syllables C seven syllables C seven syllables C and so on until your poem is complete. *** Since I couldn't find an example of this form on Writing.Com (imagine that if you will) I wrote one for the occasion. :) "Invalid Item" Five soldiers guard a mass grave That holds the lives thrown away Ultimate cost of war paid. The first man sees hopes emptied In a cadaverous sea Thinking, “Thank God it’s not me” The next, on one knee descends, And deeply laments the ends Of fathers, brothers, and friends Another can hear the ring, The sounds of ghost bullets zing To the still void of nothing. The fourth’s amazed that at times Many STILL commit war crimes When? For them will death knell chime? Last yields to tearful release. With a wish for hate to cease, Then sends a mute prayer for peace. by Red Writing Hood <3 ***Try the Englyn and then send it to myself or Jen and I'll insist that Jen feature it next week! *** :) Online Englyn Examples of Englyn (Milwr and other versions) outside the Writing.Com community. http://www.cybercom.net/~klb/part2.html - Englyn versions and examples. http://kalliope.hypermart.net/welsh.html - Welsh poetry and forms http://www.britannia.com/wales/lit/lit2.html More Welsh poetry and forms Writing.Com Poetry Contests August
