A man calming down after an argument encounters more than he expected. |
Midnight in Missouri Midnight in Missouri A silver moon hangs in the sky Crickets call from out the darkness An old Ford Pontiac screams by With the man behind the wheel Just trying to let off steam From a row with his fiancée So mad he wants to scream Up ahead around some corners With a fire red dirt bike Stands a kid out in the roadside Loitering within the night With his cigarette in hand Waiting for a passer-by With ominous intentions, He gazes at the starlit sky "You walk out that door" she said "You're never comin' back" Dust clouds from the tires Replied with gravel from the track And from a packet on the dash Another cigarette, he takes He rounded the next corner And anchored on the brakes Up ahead in misty moonlight Stood a kid by a dirt bike A dirt bike, so fire red It blazed within the night Storming out the Pontiac His anger held its sway With eyes as sharp as razors The kid just looked the other way By the time he reached the kid He found him pointing at the ground The ground so far beneath them Where the overpass was down And down there in the gorge Was a fire red dirt bike A body mangled there beside it In the quicksilver moonlight And when he looked back up The kid and bike were gone A solitary, chill wind blew In silver moonlight, the mist shone And he looked around so vacantly At events so quickly passed At midnight in Missouri At the Missouri overpass |
