I go to a private Christian school. We are pretty small. It is nice sometimes. We have soccer, basketball, and volleyball for sports. What really bugs me about my class is the fact that almost every other student has no desire to learn more than what they know already. They just want to skate through life. Any assignment that takes the smallest amount of brainpower is stupid! I want to learn. I want to go to college and become a writer when I grow up. I like to figure out new concepts. I can't help feeling that the world we are growing up in today is breeding the type of person who thinks of school as a waste of time and all they want to do is watch tv all day. The thought of working shocks them. School has been dumbed down for the average kid today. Back in the early colonial days our schools were teaching tons of stuff to 10 year olds that the bright 15 year olds of today can't grasp. We expect to get smart leaders of tomorrow without giving them any preparation for it. I don't know how other schools are operating. I don't know how well they are doing. It is my experience that kids are getting stupider and stupider as the days go by. Maybe we should try to find the off button for the tv and start experiencing new things. Maybe we should read more often. The average kid's vocabulary consists purely on "yeah" and "cool." How is our world going to function in the future? Are we going to get so stupid that we go back to the Dark Ages? Are we going to forget everything we could have known just because of the one invention misused the most in the world, TV? We should find ways of stretching our brain power to at least a fourth of the energy. We should strive for excellence even when we don't think we can make it. We need to get over our laziness and get back to work. School is becoming a place of punishment for the interested learner and the blase drone. Nobody likes it because the drones slow down everybody else. Let's change the world one student at a time.:)
