Weekly Editor's Letter: Making the Most of Your Research Recently I was given the assignment of writing a travel article. Since we are planning a trip to Branson at the end of June, the location was a cinch. However, after doing a bit of research I discovered: There is a HECK of a lot to experience there. It has been my experience that articles (poetry, flash fiction, short stories, novels… You get the picture) are best when they are tightly focused. Well, the more I researched, the more interesting material I discovered. After I finally decided what I was going to focus on for my article, I was left with a pile of great research I didn’t use. I spent several weeks compiling this research and it would be a shame to waste it… So I won’t. Now I have outlines in the works for several more articles, a short story or two, and after my visit, several poems. By taking my research and re-defining my focus I can create something new, with less effort. Write smart and make the most of your research. Squeeze out every last juicy bite.
