These lyrics are about a guy immigrating (in the old days) to Canada but never making it.
A corny love song/poem? Yes. It's supposed to be a letter to the love of his life. He dies on the journey because of medical problems (starvation, or injuries, etc. whatever you want). It's based on all the Irish songs about lost love i.e. Danny Boy, Irish Blessing.

Journey Into the Unknown

There are places we all must go
And when I leave you must then know
When I bid you adieu
Remember that I loved you

Hate me for leaving you
But love me for our love that's true
Yet our fates can't decide
If I should stay by your side

The ponds are just like oceans
The hills like mountains
If I could make it there
I could make it anywhere

I'd rather dive into your soul
Than a lake that's freezing cold
I want to search for your hand
Rather than an unpromised land

There are places we all must go
And when I don't come back you'll know
There's something in the sky so blue
And is my undying love for you
