Things we can, and especially can't, control.
Man can tame the wild beast,
Sail mighty ships from West to East.
Tho' all these feats he may have done
He cannot tame the fiery tongue.

The beast we turn with just a bit,
A small helm turns a mighty ship.
The fire that can be tamed by none
Is the fire of a pois'nous tongue.

Our tongue can speak both soft and hard,
The wicked edge of bladed sword.
Our tongue gives praise to God on high
Then turns to make our neighbor cry.

God says such things ought not to be,
The tongue can turn on me or thee.
Whatever in the heart might be
The tongue spits out for all to see.

Let God put there His holy love
And gracious mercy from above.
So daily drink the Father's milk
To keep your tongue as soft as silk.
