It was happening again; I heard
The screaming, although not a word
Or sound was coming out at all;
I was trapped inside a darkened hall.
No way out and yet I tried
To claw my way to the outside
And the blood ran cold, dark and red;
As he lay there on the floor quite dead.
The knife that I held in my hands
Was the beginning of my plans
To get away from the pain, abuse;
Yet I knew that it was no excuse.
I screamed and screamed until the dawn
When I found another night had gone;
And the man beside me quietly slept
After causing all the tears I wept.
Another day like that I couldn't face,
So I took the knife from its hiding place;
And into his heart I plunged the knife,
I would no longer be a battered wife.
His eyes wide in death denied
That he would ever leave my side;
And death-grip hands reached out to me
In a silent, unforgiving plea.
The screaming started once more
As I ran to the hall and out the door;
I knew I would never be free
From the eyes of death chasing me.
