QUATERN Poetry Form

SAY WHAT?

It’s pronounced “kwa turn”.

BRIEF HISTORY

Quatern is Latin for “four at a time”. It is a French form, most likely from the end of the Middle Ages.

MUST HAVES

Four stanzas with four lines each. Ah, now the name makes sense. It has eight syllables per line and uses the first line as a refrain. The placement of this refrain in each stanza is interesting, as you will see in the example.

COULD HAVES

Pick a rhyme scheme or choose to have none at all. There is no set theme or subject matter.

Featured Quote

The great French Marshall Lyautey once asked his gardener to plant a tree. The gardener objected that the tree was slow growing and would not reach maturity for 100 years. The Marshall replied, 'In that case, there is no time to lose; plant it this afternoon!'
