I remember
the caress of the
notes flittering about
the air....
the staggering
first notes- awkward and
slow-coming;
the headaches of
theory clenching at my
skull; the desire
grasping now
to live
each beat over again,
once again.
My fingers itch to introduce
that familiar, ethereal echo
into the world
just one last time...
But I must go-
I must leave;
I must continue on my way.
White ivory, black as night,
worn wood smooth to
my gentle touch....
I turn off
the light and leave
the beauty
behind the closed doors
in the room, now dark,
though the whispers of
yesterday's tune
will follow eternally
in my memories
of that
goodbye.
This is a poem about a girl who, having taken years of piano lessons on an old, wooden piano, becomes an accomplished pianist who must now leave the old piano behind. It was inspired by George Winston's Winter CD.
