“Shut up Lady, you talk to much.” The judge snapped mercilessly.

Then turning his attention to the defendant asked, “Sir, do you have an attorney?”

“Your Honor, if she does not have an attorney, then I don’t need one.” The defendant quipped. The ensuing laughter in the courtroom was maddening.

The judge turned back to the plaintiff and ordered, “Don’t come back until you have an attorney.”

“Your Honor, I have the right to represent myself.” The once battered woman, prepared with legal arguments, now found herself being publicly ridiculed and verbally brutalized by a judge.

“Not in my courtroom, woman.”
