On holiday in Florida this July I came across... This patriotic poem is the result.

This land of plenty but with empty platitudes.
Have a nice day to some, but to others show attitudes
That are extremely hostile and openly prejudicial.
Feelings expressed that are so obviously superficial.
How can so much affluence be built on the one side;
When on the other, who cares if a man has lived or died?
Millions paid for a house with a yard full of palm trees.
Over the road, unpainted tin cans, and a life filled with unease.

Two contrasts to be found within the very same street;
Two halves that do not fit, can't compare or compete.
There is no winner to be seen, and no one can ever brag;
These extremes exist, and truly don't glorify the flag
That wars have been fought for, and lives have been given;
So many people, silently, for a freedom they have striven.
Soldiers have not died for their sons to live in poverty;
Or to struggle in the land that they adopted to be free!

Each day veterans leave their cans, and go down to the shore,
Sell pitiful provisions to people who can't really ask for more,
They turn the other cheek, ignore jibes made at their expense;
Pray, if they still believe, sons and daughters won't experience
Or see the terrible sights of war that have taken their toll;
The dreadful price they've paid; if put to the public poll,
Who will vote for their recognition, shake them by the hand?
Who will look at them, honour them, say thanks and understand?
