I CANNOT RETREAT—a sonnet



My love, you are attracted by others;
For me a thought or glance you cannot spare.
Soon you will be forsaken by lovers;
Their love is not like mine, so pure and rare.

Now you are enamoured of their beauty.
Fade up it will when their skin is wrinkled.
For my heart love is a call of duty.
My whole being is deep with your love sprinkled.

Ask your heart if you can live without me.
None else can love you so much as I do.
I don’t have a desire but only this,
That I may give myself fully to you.

For you my heart does every moment beat.
I cannot from your love ever retreat.
