A "Soi" is a street in Thai. Living in a Soi means being involved in the local life style. It is indeed very difficult to escape the neighbours in a street where all the houses have common walls.
All the houses are made according to the same model, so you know exactly what the other houses look like.
At the top of the Soi, meaning at the end where the street meets a bigger street, there were, a month ago, a few stalls selling vegetables.
After one week or so, more street merchants came and set up a table, a shade. Then a man stood at the side of the street to call potential customers.
One evening, we noticed that some people were building sheds with wood and bamboo. Then electricity came, like a miracle. In fact, someone pulled an electric wire from his house and sold the "service" to the street merchants.
The market is now all set up with about fifty stalls, selling vegetable, fish, clothes etc... It goes on all day and late into the night.
It is not said how long the market will last, things are not very strict in Thailand, if you know who to bribe, and when.
