 Here another "lesson" in German for y'all – this time not a culinary "lesson" but the Christmas Edition.  All words are in native German, with translation so you see what you're actually searching for – and why I included it. Viel Spaß.  Advent => the 4 Sundays before Christmas Adventskaffee => having coffee on the Advent Sundays, usually hosted by the grandparents (a slowly dying out with them tradition  ) Still remember it from my time studying in Munich and living with my grandma and uncle in her house.Adventskalender => usually a cardboard box with 24 compartment filled with chocolate. In the previous like 20 yrs they were extended to containing tea, cosmetics, etc. Adventskranz => usually a fir wreath with some (kitschy) decoration and four candles of which one (more) is lit each Advent Sunday. (Since my parents' death mine's Dad's cheese platter with four tea-light holders on four white porcelain snowflakes and some silver stars and "fir" cones.) Christkind => Baby Jesus; brings the Geschenke (presents) Familie => family Geschenke => presents Grincherella => me on Christmas since 2017 (my first Christmas after my parents' deaths) Kartoffel mit Wurst => short for Kartoffelsalat mit Würstchen (potato salad with wieners), a traditional dish on Christmas Eve. My MOM used to make it – sometimes also schnitzel instead of wieners. Kerzen => CANDLES Need I say more?  They're bloody EVERYWHERE, on the window sills, the tables, shelves/side boards.  Lichterketten => FAIRY LIGHTS See  Since I don't have a tree anymore since my parents' deaths, I simply hang them in the windows and along the walls. Nikolaustag => St. Nick's Day on December 6. I still remember when I was a little girl, shone my boot (always singular), and put it outside the front door the previous night... and it was filled with EXTRA sweets (see Adventskalender), little toys, etc. when I opened the door the next morning. (Of course I was always a GOOD girl.  )Plätzchen backen => baking cookies. Remembrance => okay, NOT a particularly German word.  But it BEST describes getting nostalgic about childhood/past Christmases, remembering those who can't celebrate with us anymore. "Guilty" of that... but have some DARN GOOD memories, too. Schmücken => Decorating. In the context of Christmas: decking the halls / outdoors And, dudes, some Christmas-crazy Germans' houses can EASILY keep up with the Christmas deco in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, NY.  Er, Weihnachtsbaum => Christmas TREE Weihnachtsfilme => Christmas MOVIES My faves are While you were sleeping & Eve's Christmas (the latter ending with a nice twist) Weihnachtsgans => Christmas GOOSE, equivalent to – and as opulent  – as the Christmas turkey in the US (UK?) Another traditional (and dying out) Christmas dish which my DAD used to make on the 25th.Weihnachtslieder => Christmas CAROLS, in German & English. Sung and listened to. Specifically German?Rudelsingen! ("pack singing") = People gather in soccer stadiums to sing Christmas carols together! Weihnachtsmarkt => Christmas MARKET. Glühwein (mulled wine), gebrannte Mandeln (candied almonds), Lebkuchen (gingerbread), here we coooome! Weihnachtsshopping => Christmas shopping Weihnachtsstress => Christmas STRESS. I think we all know the feeling of too much to do in too little month , from present/food shopping, to meal planning/cooking/baking, decking the halls, hosting family, etc.  Weiße Weihnachten => WHITE Christmas. Nope!  The last white Christmas I remember was... 2010... I think. Well, a girl may still dream. Zuhause sein => being home with your loved ones, hopefully not ripping each others' heads off from Weihnachtsstress boiling over. Zusammen kommen => family (blood / chosen) gathering for Christmas.
