WYRM is a peer-review group for those with a passion for writing speculative fiction and in-depth reviews. You probably got that from the group's item description. Or the byline in our header image. We're just trying to see if we can make ourselves tired of it before we commit to having T-shirts made.
What kind(s) of "speculative fiction" do WYRMs write and review? ▼
All of it. Fantasy and science fiction, yes. Ghosts and vampires and werewolves and zombies and whatever other supernatural or paranormal creatures you can come up with, let's meet them. Maybe just a touch of weird, a hint of otherworldliness in the events of the tale, and we're there for that, too. We have WYRMs who love the straightforward grounded-in-science-type speculative fiction and we have WYRMs who love the speculative fiction that's grounded in magic. We have WYRMs who love both of those, everything in between, and all the cross-overs. If your stories have by-Google-definition speculative fiction elements, they fit. We do prefer pieces by writers who proofread, and who have developed some skill at formulating sentences and putting them together in ways that make for a pleasing reading experience
What do WYRMs mean by "in-depth reviews"? ▼
What we look for in in-depth reviews is more about the thought and care the reviewer employs than the following of any formula. An in-depth review is not necessarily a laundry list of "what's wrong." Sometimes there's nothing wrong, but you can still write an in-depth review.
We need to know about the experience you had while reading—about what/who stood out, struck just the right (or wrong) chords. Consider, really consider, the elements of the story or chapter—the characters, the setting, the plot, the conflict, and the resolution. You won't always be discussing all five of those. Some pieces lack a traditional version of any or all of those, and you need to be able to frame your reading experience around that.
We are not in the market for reviews that focus on grammar and writing mechanics; a smattering of those kinds of comments is great when needed, but if that's the meat of your review it's not an in-depth review.
Who are the WYRMs? ▼
We've had WYRMs from four continents and multiple countries. We've had WYRMs who write with no publishing aspirations, and we've had WYRMs with multiple published pieces. We've had junior editors and slush readers. We get so involved with knowing one another as people, though, that we forget these demographics.
[ Applications Closed ]
WYRM has moved from WdC, but it is still alive and active. During and after the transition, we are not accepting applications from new or returning members. If you'd like to be considered once applications are open, let us know in an email to WYRM or in a post to "Talk to the WYRMs" .
