This is the first chapter in book one, Ghost Peppers.
Part 1, Chapter 1
A gray sky stretched over Ogunquit, Maine, casting a dim, muted glow over the police station. Inside, however, the atmosphere was anything but gloomy. Detective Penelope Peppers—Penny to those closest to her—ran a thumb over the polished surface of her new detective badge, feeling the thrill of her accomplishment. The ceremony had been brief, but the joy and pride of her new position radiated through her, making the badge feel like a symbol of her success.

“Well, Detective Peppers,” Captain Rayburn had said with a rare smile, clapping her shoulder after the pinning ceremony. “Ogunquit PD is lucky to have you. Don’t make me regret it.”

Penny had managed a smile in return, feeling both elated and terrified. She’d fought hard for this position, pushed through every late night, every grueling training session, and every moment of self-doubt. She thought back to her childhood, a past that sometimes crept up on her unexpectedly—memories she still struggled to push aside.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and glanced down to see a familiar name on the screen.

Jackie: Still on for dinner tonight? Can’t wait to celebrate.

Penny smiled, her heart lifting. Jackie Connors, her partner of nearly a decade, was her rock, her greatest supporter, and so much more than anyone else would ever understand. Jackie had taken her in when Penny was just fourteen, just after the unimaginable loss of her parents. Since then, they'd weathered life's storms together, and their connection had deepened in ways neither could have foreseen. She tapped out a quick reply.

Penny: Wouldn’t miss it for the world.

Later that evening, Penny stepped into their cozy home, her heart swelling with pride and gratitude as the familiar, comforting scents of garlic and rosemary filled the air. Jackie had put her culinary skills to work—something Penny cherished after every tough shift.
“Detective Peppers,” Jackie greeted her from across the kitchen, a mischievous sparkle in her green eyes as she held up a glass of wine. “How’s it feel to be Ogunquit’s finest?”

Penny chuckled, making her way over and instantly falling into Jackie’s arms. Jackie’s embrace was her haven, her sanctuary, the place where every fear and worry seemed to dissolve. She closed her eyes, letting herself sink into Jackie’s warmth. “Strange, actually. But good. Like…I finally made it.”

Jackie’s hand came up to gently rub her back as she whispered, “You earned every bit of this.” Her voice was soft, sincere, each word grounding Penny in a way that only Jackie could.

The evening had been arranged with special care: candles flickered on the table, illuminating an elegant dinner spread of steak, roasted potatoes, and a rich red wine sauce. Penny’s heart melted, seeing the effort Jackie had put into celebrating her achievement. As they sat down, Jackie raised her glass, her smile warm with pride. “To Ogunquit’s newest detective,” she toasted. “May you always feel this proud of yourself, Penny.”

Blushing, Penny clinked her glass against Jackie’s. “I couldn’t have done any of this without you.”

“Oh, stop it,” Jackie said, waving a hand but clearly pleased. “I just cheered from the sidelines.”

“That’s exactly what I needed,” Penny replied softly, her gaze holding Jackie’s. “You were there when no one else was.”
Jackie’s face softened, and she reached across the table, her hand covering Penny’s. “And I always will be.”
They sat in comfortable silence for a moment, letting memories of their shared journey—the laughter, the struggles, the resilience they’d found together—speak for themselves. The bond between them was deeper than words, forged through years of supporting and understanding each other.

As the meal wound down, Jackie cleared her throat, her expression turning serious. “Penny, I know this job means the world to you, but… promise me you’ll stay safe out there. Every time you walk out that door, I worry.”

Penny gave Jackie’s hand a reassuring squeeze. “I will. I promise.” She could hear the concern in Jackie’s voice, and she understood it. The weight of her new role was daunting, but knowing she had Jackie to come home to made it all worth it.

They ended the night curled up on the couch, Penny resting securely in Jackie’s arms as they watched an old movie. Jackie held her close, her fingers massaging Penny’s shoulder. Penny’s thoughts drifted, thinking about the cases and the people she’d help in her new role, but tonight, all that mattered was being here, wrapped in Jackie’s embrace, savoring this moment.
