White everywhere. A massive snow drift reached up to the living room window. Mark and Josie sat on the couch and watched the snowplow make passes on the highway.

“Lots of snow.”

“No school tomorrow.”

“You wish. Maybe we can get the sled out today.”

Josie turned to Mark. “Where is the sled?”

“In the garage.”

“Not in the shed?” She wrinkled her forehead while thinking.

Mark thought while watching a car try to make the hill.

“Want to go check?”

The two found coats, snow pants, mittens and boots. Then they shuffled to the back door, snow halfway up the screen door. A big drift lay across the path to the garage. The shed sat at the back of the yard with a drift nearly to the top of its roof.

“Well, so much for that idea.” Josie started to take off her winter gear.

“Giving up so soon?”

“We can’t get to the garage. Look at that snow!”

“I see lots of fun.” Mark opened the back door, waded through the snow. Several moments later he reached the garage and waved to Josie.

She mumbled, put back on her coat, hat, mittens and boots. Then joined Mark.

Mark had the sled and started back toward the shed. “Let’s go.”

Soon the two were on the shed’s roof, fashioning a sled hill toward the house.

Mom and Dad came home from work early, car slipping and sliding into the garage.

“What are you two doing out here?” yelled Dad.

“It’s our Olympic bobsled run! See?” Mark yelled as Josie slid down from the shed’s roof.

“You’ll get hurt. Into the house with you both!” screamed Mom.

Their parents hurried into the house.

“Nuts,” muttered Josie.

“Ha! Best day ever!” Mark threw a huge snowball at her.
