Cakiness Rules

Medea Graham was judging the fancy decorated cakes at the county fair. Clipboard in hand, she walked up to the deal tables that held all the entrants’ creations. She stopped in astonishment.

She studied the cake in front of her closely. It was elegantly iced and decorated with an edging of candy leaf shapes. She looked up with a smile at the contestant.

“Why a triangle shape?”

Eloise Tumpkin blushed. Medea waited.

“I made a square cake. I was waiting for it to cool, when I got distracted. By the time I got back to it, my family had all taken pieces out of it! I didn’t have time or ingredients to make another, so I shaped what was left into a triangle.

“I looked all over in my cupboards for the items I’d purchased to decorate the cake with. All there was left were crumbs of icing. Beside myself with panic, I took some mini mint leaves jellied candies and went to work. My royal icing was flavored with white chocolate flavoring to compliment the mint.”

Medea cut a corner off the triangle and tasted it.

“This is a wonderfully flavored cake! I am even more impressed with your ingenuity! I’ve had the same thing happen to me when preparing for a judging and I just went to pieces. I ended up not entering because I was too distraught!”

The judge pulled out a first-place ribbon and pinned it to the tablecloth in front of the cake. Eloise gasped and began to cry.

“Well deserved, especially as you must be a first timer; since I’ve never seen you at a cake judging before!”

She handed her a business card.

“Come and see me on the Monday after the fair. We can discuss a job at my shop!”
