Sometimes, weird things stick in your brain
I heard a thing
on TV one day
that really blew me away.

They talked about children
and eating well
and identifying vegetables
that nature gives us.

Urban kids today, they said,
weren't really sure what beets were.
What the heck are Brussels sprouts?
Broccoli looks like tiny green trees
so no one should eat those!

What shocked me most
being raised on a farm
was that kids these days
have this crazy notion
that French fries
simply come from the supermarket.

They have no clue
that farmers toil
every year, all season long
preparing the soil
growing the plants
nurturing them
harvesting the roots
packing them
before they're shipped to a processing plant
where crispy golden fries are made.

All before they are packed into bags
and sent to the freezer
at the grocery store.
