grownups childhood wish of reciprocating Santa's generosity with a gift

Many, many years ago as Christmas time grew close,
I tried to think of something nice to do for Santa Claus.

On Christmas Eve, he always brought a lot of toys for me,
And placed them all so nicely beneath our sparkling tree.

He always filled my stockings too with special little treats,
Like things for play, puzzles to solve and even things to eat.

Of course, it wasn't only me who got a lot of toys,
For Santa travels, even today, to every girl and boy.

In just a wink, he's around the world and never does he fail,
To drive his sleigh through dark of night, through snow, wind or hail.

But it isn't only flying through the sky with eight reindeer,
Much more keeps Santa bustling throughout a busy year.

A group of elves helps him read all the letters children write,
Reading each and every day and sometimes through the night.

For years he recalled the wishes of every girl and boy,
Picking out the very toys these children would enjoy.

Now don't you think it's marvelous and all so very grand?
And don't you think we're lucky having such a jolly man?

Yes, I said to myself one day as an idea popped up like a spark,
The thought of giving in return came straight from in my heart.

I longed to find the perfect gift, to leave for the jolly man,
To show that I was grateful, I decided to make a plan.

Having saved a bunch of money in my good old piggy bank,
I'd buy a gift I could afford, and Santa I would thank.

Maybe I'd buy a pair of boots all shiny new and bright,
Ones that he would only wear upon that special night.

Or maybe even a brand-new hat with flaps to warm his ears,
One that I am very sure would last for several years.

I thought for many hours but my mind just came up blank,
I couldn't afford the perfect gift with the pennies in my bank.

The days and weeks, oh how they seemed to hurry, scurry past,
Christmas Eve was getting closer very, very fast.

Everyone was happy, but I was sad because,
I didn't have a perfect gift to give to Santa Claus.

And then the idea hit me - just like a ton of bricks!
Of course, I had it all along - my very special gift.

What happens when we think of Santa Claus each year?
All at once we're happy and brimming with good cheer.

This is what Santa really wants; everyone full of joy,
With family and friends all around to love and to enjoy.

Why do we always forget him right at the end of December?
Why don't we think about him in March or in September?

Wouldn't it be nice if, in talk and in work and play,
To have the very frame of mind that Santa has each day?

And so my gift to Santa Claus is now so very dear,
As I renew my promise with each and every year:

To think of Jolly Old St. Nick at least one time each week,
And enjoy the happy feeling from my head down to my feet.
