Opening Cthulhu's Gate

         Sam Adams was retiring from his position of many years at the Cosmos Institute in Berkeley, California, where he was a paranormal researcher in what they called themselves the True Life X-Files. He had received a notice that his uncle, who was not particularly close to him, had died and left him his estate in Eagle Point, Oregon, where he had grown up. Eagle Point used to be a boring rundown town, but now it was becoming hip as all of Southern Oregon was now filled with hipsters drinking Kombucha, wine, and craft beer and smoking Oregon weed.

         So Sam and his wife Maria decided they would retire and move up to Eagle Point and take over the old rambling mansion and restore it. And maybe flip it. They would see how things go.

         They arrived at the mansion and met with the contractor and they were going over the plans. They wanted to gut the kitchen and open it up and make the place a lot more livable. The house was an old mansion with ten rooms and badly configured, built in the 1890s. Joe Adams, Sam’s uncle, had been a professor of medieval studies at Southern Oregon State University in Ashland and was an eccentric old man.

         He was a member of the Lovecraft Society, as was Sam and his wife Maria. The Lovecraft Society believed HP Lovecraft, the writer who was a distant relative of Sam's, was writing true stories disguised as fiction, and their members of society were obsessed with trying to find a legendary book, The Necronomicon, which allegedly would, if you opened it and used the chants correctly, open portals to other universes, other dimensions, and in one of those dimensions lay the dreaded ancient gods led by Cthulu, who had been in prison in the other dimension for millions of years as part of a cosmic battle between Good and Evil, and Cthulu was pure evil.

         They used to rule the universe. Sam and his wife believed in this myth as well. One day they were working in the kitchen and the contractor knocked down the walls, and in the walls they found a package with a letter addressed to Sam. The package contained a copy of the Necronomicon with the following letter from his uncle.

         “If you are reading this Sam it is because I have died and I've left you my house. You will find this package and letter in the house, as you no doubt will find out because I know you'll want to renovate the kitchen.

         What I need you to do is to open the portal at midnight on a full moon night and do the chants on page 99 that will open the world to the dimensions in which Cthulu is imprisoned. On page 100 there is a chant which will reseal the portal and put him back in prison. But you have to open the gate first, then close the gate within ten minutes. If you wait too long, the gate will remain open and Cthulu and his forces will take over the world, enslaving humanity forever. It is up to you to stop them.

         However, when you open the gate, you will find mysterious people coming through. They will tell you all sorts of things. All lies to get you to keep the gate open. They need you to keep the gate open 10 minutes. If you close it within that 10 minutes then Cthulu and his henchmen will be locked again in their prison. It is up to you, my friend.

                   I opened the gate, unfortunately, I failed to close it and some of the Cthulu minions escaped and they are running around the world right now. Disguised as human beings, they are shape-shifting lizard people and they are amassing political power. You can stop them. It's up to you. Sam. I know we haven't really gotten along over the years, but you are my last heir and it is up to you. Please do the right thing. And remember trust no one, anyone can be one of them. They are everywhere and are watching the house even as we speak. And they will kill me soon. Goodbye nephew, I wish I was a better uncle to you.”

         Sam looked at his wife and said this is ridiculous but let's do it anyway

         He summoned the rest of the Lovecraft association and the members, all 12 of them, got together at midnight two days later on the wolf moon night. They assembled in the main room. Sam took the Necronomicon and they chanted the verses on page 99.

         A bright blue door appeared and strange-looking men in black suits poured through. Soon there were over a thousand heavily armed people standing there. They were all pan-ethnic looking, could be almost anything, but had a sinister, slightly non-human look and spoke with a strange accent.

         The leader told them to prepare for Cthulu’s return.

         A large octopus-like creature walked through the door and said

         “I am Cthulu, ruler of the universe. Who opened the door?”

         Sam said,

         “I did.”

         Cthulu looked at him and said,

“          You and your followers will be my deputies as I enslave your world. You will obey me or die. Do you accept the commission?”

         Sam said he did.

         Cthulu grunted and thousands more soldiers poured through. Within days it was over, humanity’s last day as free human beings ended that January morning and Sam was responsible.
