The Bench by the Bakery

Every Sunday morning, old Mr. Henderson sat on the bench outside Maple Street Bakery with a worn paperback in his lap and a paper cup of hot chocolate in his hand. He'd been doing this for years, long after his wife passed, long after the bookstore closed, and long after most people in town stopped remembering his name.

But Lily remembered.

She was nine, wild haired and full of questions, and every Sunday she’d sneak out of bed early just to sit next to him on that same bench. She brought her sketchpad, and while he read, she drew. Sometimes birds. Sometimes pastries from the window. Once, she tried to draw him, but he’d caught her mid-sketch and made a silly face that ruined the whole thing. They both laughed so hard, her orange juice came out her nose.

He never said much. Just offered her a sip of his hot chocolate now and then. But she liked that about him. The quiet. The calm. The way he smiled without needing a reason.

One Sunday, he wasn’t there.

Then another.

And another.

Lily still showed up, sketchpad in hand, but the bench felt colder without him.

Then one morning, the bakery door creaked open, and the owner handed Lily a box wrapped in brown paper. Inside was a new sketchpad. On the first page, a note in the loopy handwriting she’d come to know:

“Keep drawing. The world needs to see it.”

She cried. Not the loud kind. The quiet kind, like falling leaves.

Years later, Lily’s art would hang in galleries. But tucked into every frame, somewhere hidden, would be a tiny sketch of a bench and a man holding a book.
