Act 5 [First Round] "Hapi, Moni, good morning on Gantan!""Good morning!"It's a fine Sunday morning in September. Gantan, they often come here to eat breakfast bread as if it were their own home. Grandpa Ken and Grandma Natsu got married through an arranged marriage, and now they share a common hobby of golf. When they got married at 25, Ken was skiing and windsurfing, but had no interest in golf. Natsu, who is one year older than Ken, is the fourth daughter of five siblings, the first three of which were girls, and Natsu's parents were very Hapi when they had their first boy. The youngest boy was loved by his sisters, and he was apparently the closest to Natsu, the fourth daughter, who was close to his age. All of his older sisters had married, and his parents ran a self-employed machine factory, so they were busy working every day, their hands covered in oil. The youngest son, instead of going to college, graduated from high school and started helping his parents. Natsu, the fourth daughter, is a fashionable grandmother with excellent fashion sense who works as a helper at the boutique run by the eldest daughter. The husbands of the older sisters all share a common hobby of golf, and Natsu was often taken to the driving range by the husbands of the youngest daughter and the eldest daughter. The eldest daughter's husband, Shin-san, is a very caring and kind husband. He is rarely at the boutique as a man, and has no other work to do than opening and closing the store, traveling to Tokyo for trade shows to purchase products, playing golf with buyers and manufacturers, and negotiating, so he often buys lunch boxes and sandwiches for the two people who work at the store and don't have time to eat lunch. When he went on business trips to Tokyo, he took Natsu along and treated her to delicious food in the evening, and both Natsu and the youngest son looked up to him and thought of him as an older brother. For the two, he was the first big brother they had ever had, so they relied on him like they were real siblings. Natsu had never played on a course, but Shin-san had taken the youngest boy to the course several times, and the two became more and more absorbed in golf. When Ken married Natsu, Shin-san gave Ken a golf set as a gift. It was almost as if he had been forced to go to the driving range. At that time, Ken was working as an architect for a commercial facility design and construction company in Osaka. He would load his golf bag into his car for commuting, and hit balls at the driving range after work and on his days off, and gradually he began to like golf. One evening, the four husbands of the sisters gathered at Natsu's parents' house and, while chatting, got excited talking about golf. There was a short course in Hibarigaoka where you could play at night, so Shin-san, the second sister's husband, Ken, and the youngest brother went out to play night golf. It was Ken's first time on the field, and the course lit up by the lights was fantastic, with the green in the distance shining brighter than the dark greens around it. On the first hole, a short hole with an uphill approach, rookie Ken hit a nice iron shot that surprised all his brothers. "I wonder if it landed on the green!"The ball got close to the green and all he remembers was that tee shot, the rest seemed to be a mess. Ken was frustrated but also had fun, and he became more and more absorbed in golf and started going to the driving range."The weather is nice today, so shall we go to the driving range?"Natsu said.Hapi said"Yes! Let's go!"The five of them, except for Ken who was at work, went to the driving range with Mom, Moni, and Gantan. Moni's mom was watching, and she wanted to eat tea dumplings at the tea shop after practice. Moni, the younger sister, loves these tea dumplings, and she ate them on a skewer with relish while sipping slightly cooled tea."It's weird, like a kid from the old days!"Gantan follows me everywhere. It's my first time playing golf, and I keep swinging and missing."That was just a practice swing.""How many times are you going to practice?"Gantan hits the artificial mat without hitting the ball. Hapi lived in neighboring Korea until a few years ago after giving birth in Japan due to Daddy's work, and took swimming lessons and screen golf lessons for about a year near her apartment. She was also given a second-hand set of Nike golf clubs for herself, and Natsu praises her for her beautiful swing form. After moving to Kyoto with her family, we went to the practice range several times, and one of Hapi's favorite things to do is to eat matcha parfaits or matcha soft serve at a tea shop. There is a prestigious course called Ayama Country Club in Iga City, Mie Prefecture, which Ken and Natsu often use, and there is a system to train junior golfers, and in early summer of that year, Hapi played his first round. The caddy master of the starting room, who always takes care of us, asked Hapi-chan."Hapi-chan is so cute. What kind of ball does Hapi-chan have? I got it from my grandpa.""Hahaha, it's the best ball!"It's rare to see an elementary school golfer, and the customers in the following group and the gallery in the clubhouse are all paying attention to Hapi's tee shot. First, Ken and Daddy hit from the regular tee, and then it's Hapi's turn from the red tee. When he takes a practice swing, the gallery is all excited by his brilliant form."Wow! What a good swing."Hapi was a little nervous, but his first shot was a nice shot that brushed over the ball and rolled forward! Still, he hits his second shot with a wood and drives it 120 yards, and everyone says,"Nice shot!"It's a bittersweet golf debut for Hapi. Golf originated in Scotland, and St. Andrews, where the major tournament, the British Open, is famous. In the old days, people used to roll and launch rubber balls with wooden golf clubs, hold a mobile case full of Scotch, play, drink the whole bottle, and drink the whole bottle by the 18th hole, so it was decided that one round is 18 holes. Nowadays, you load your golf bag onto an electric cart and slowly move along the cart path, walking or riding in the cart, playing the first nine holes, taking a meal break at the restaurant in the clubhouse, playing another nine holes in the afternoon, and relaxing in the bath to relax your muscles. It's a sport that you can play for a whole day and feel fulfilled. These days, it's mainstream to play with a companion using a self-owned cart, but Grandpa Ken said,"When Grandpa first started playing, he had a caddy and the caddy could ride in a cart that only he could ride standing up, and after hitting the ball well, he had to run away holding two or three clubs." Then there was a push cart with wheels that you pulled yourself. There are many team sports, but golf is a sport where you compete for scores by yourself, for better or worse. A nice shot makes you feel good, but a bad shot or an out-of-bounds shot makes you feel disappointed, it's a sport where you fight against yourself. On that hole in the vast golf course, only our family and group were standing, what a luxurious space we occupied. Hapi's self-reported round score of 120 was an unforgettable first round day for Hapi.

「ハピ、モニ、元旦おはよう!」

「おはよう!」

天気の良い９月の日曜日の朝です。

元旦は朝のパンを自分の家の様によく食べに来る。

おじいちゃんのケンさんとおばあちゃんの夏さんはお見合いで結婚して今はゴルフが共通の趣味です。

25歳で結婚した時ケンさんは、スキーや、ウインドサーフィンをしていましたが、ゴルフは興味が無かった。

ケンさんより１つ年上の夏さんは、５人兄妹の四女、上の３人が皆女の子で、下に初めて男の子が産まれて夏さんの親が随分と喜んだそうです。

末っ子の男の子は姉達から可愛がられ、歳も近かった四女の夏さんとは1番仲が良かったらしい。

上の姉が、皆んな嫁いで、自営の機械工場を営む両親は、毎日忙しく手を油まみれに働いていました。

末っ子の男の子が、大学に行かず高等学校を卒業すると親の手伝いをするようになった。

四女の夏さんは、長女が経営しているブティックのお店に手伝いで働くファッションセンスに優れたオシャレなおばあちゃんです。

上の姉達の旦那さんの共通の趣味はゴルフで、夏さんも、末っ子と長女の旦那さんによくゴルフの練習場に連れてもらっていました。

長女の旦那さんの真さんは面倒みが良くてとても優しい旦那さんです。

ブティックに男性としてお店に立つことも少なく、開店、閉店の準備、商品買付の展示会で東京への出張や、バイヤー、メーカーとの接待ゴルフ、交渉以外する仕事が無いので、忙しくお昼も食べる時間が無いお店で働く2人の為によくお弁当や、サンドイッチ等買って来てくれました。

東京出張の際は夏さんも連れて行ってもらい、夜は美味しいものをご馳走になって、夏さんも、末っ子の男の子もそんな旦那さんを兄ちゃん、お兄ちゃんと慕っていました。

2人にとっては本当に初めて出来たお兄ちゃんなので、本当の兄妹のように頼りにしていました。

夏さんはまだコースを廻った事が無いけれど末っ子の男の子は真さんがコースに何度か連れて行ってそんな2人は、ますますゴルフに、のめり込んで行きました。

ケンさんが夏さんと結婚して、真さんは、ケンさんに、ゴルフセットをプレゼントしました。

ほぼ強制的に

「練習場行っときや」

と言われたみたいでした。

その頃ケンさんは、大阪にある商業施設の設計施工会社に設計士として働いていました。

通勤用の自家用車にゴルフバッグを積んで、会社の帰りや休みの日に練習場でボールを打って段々とゴルフが好きになっていきました。

ある夕方姉妹の旦那4人が夏さんの実家に集まって、談笑しているうち、ゴルフの話で盛り上がった。

ナイターで廻れるショートコースが、雲雀ヶ丘にあって、三女の旦那さんを除く真さん、次女の旦那さん、ケンさん、末っ子の4人でナイターゴルフに繰り出しました。

ケンさんにとっては初めてのフィールド、ライトに照らされたコースは幻想的で遠くに見えるグリーンが、周りの暗いグリーンに比べて明るく光っていた。

１番ホール、打ち上げのショートホール、ルーキーのケンさんが放ったアイアンショットは、ナイスショットで兄達は皆んなビックリしている。

「乗ったんちゃうか！」

なんとそのボールはグリーンの近くまで行き覚えているのはそのティーショットのみで後はボロボロみたいでした。

そんなケンさんは悔しくも、楽しくもあり、ますますゴルフにのめり込んで、練習場に通う様になったらしいです。

「今日は天気もいいから打ちっ放しに行こうか?」

夏さんが言いました。ハピは

「うん!行く」

と言い仕事のケンさんを除くお母ちゃんと、モニちゃん、元旦の５人で練習場に行きました。

モニちゃんはお母ちゃんが見ていて練習後のお茶屋さんで食べる茶団子が目当でした。

妹のモニはこの茶団子が大好きで少し冷めたお茶をすすりながら、串に刺した茶団子を美味しそうに食べます。

「昔の子供みたいでなんかへん!」

元旦は何処に行くのにも付いて来る。元旦は初めてのゴルフで、空振りばかりしている

「今のも素振りや」

「何回素振りするねん」

元旦はボールを打たないで人工マットを打っている。

ハピは、ダディーの仕事の都合で日本で出産後、数年前迄、隣の韓国に住んでいて、アパートの近くにあるスイミングと、スクリーンゴルフのレッスンを1年ほど受けていました。自分用のナイキのゴルフクラブセットも中古で買ってもらい、スイングはとても綺麗なフォームだと夏さんも褒めています。

京都に家族で引っ越して来て何度か練習場に行き、お茶屋さんで、抹茶パフェか、抹茶ソフトを食べるのがハピの楽しみの１つになりました。

ケンさんと夏さんがよく利用する三重県の伊賀市に阿山カンツリー倶楽部と言う名門コースがあって、ジュニアゴルファーを育成するシステムがあり、その年の初夏にハピは初ラウンドを迎えました。いつもお世話になっているスタート室のキャディマスターのお兄ちゃんがハピちゃんに聞きました。

「ハピちゃんって言うの、可愛いね、ハピちゃんの持ち玉は

な～に?ドロー、フェードそれともストレート系かな?」

ハピはキョトンとしてポケットの中の持ち球を見た。

「スリクソンだよ!おじいちゃんにもらったんだよ。」

「ワッハハ、最高の持ち球やね!」

小学生のゴルファーはさすがに珍しく、後続組のお客様やクラブハウスのギャラリーも皆んなハピのティーショットを注目しています。

最初にレギュラーからケンさんとダディーが打ちレッドティーからいよいよハピの番です。

素振りをすると鮮やかなフォームにギャラリーは皆んな

「うお～!ええスイングや」

少し緊張したハピの初ショットは「ピシッ」とボールの上をコスって前にコロコロのナイスチョット!。

それでも2打目をウッドでビシッと決めて120ヤード飛ばすと皆んな

「ナイスショット!」

ハピのほろ苦いゴルフデビューです。

ボールがバンカーに捕まるとハピは手の5本いや5番でカップ目掛けて放り投げる。

（カシャン、コロコロ）見事なチップイン。

「ズルいな～」

「エヘヘ、え～の」

ゴルフはスコットランドが発祥で、メジャートーナメントの全英オープンで開催されるセントアンドリュースが有名です。

昔木製のゴルフクラブで、ゴムボールを転がしたり打ち上げたりしてスコッチの入った携帯ケースを持ちながら、プレイしてスコッチを飲み干し、無くなったのが18ホール目だったので１ラウンド18ホールと決められたらしい。

今は電動カートにゴルフバッグを積み込んでカート道をゆっくりと進みながら歩いたりカートに乗ったりして、前半の９ホールプレイし、クラブハウスのレストランで食事休憩、午後から又９ホール廻ってお風呂でゆっくりと筋肉をほぐす。

まる１日遊べる充実感味わえるスポーツだ。

最近はセルフのカートで同伴者とプレイするのが主流ですが、おじいちゃんのケンさんは言った。

「おじいちゃんがやり始めの頃はキャディーさんが付いてキャディーさんだけが立ったまま乗れるカートで、よく打った後はクラブを２，３本持って走らされたよ」

後は自分で引く車輪の付いた手押しカート。

スポーツには、団体競技が多いがゴルフは良いも悪いも自分一人でスコアを争う競技。

ナイスショットで気持ち良く、ミスショットやOBでガッカリする、自分との闘いのスポーツ。

広い広いゴルフ場のそのホールにたたずんでいるのは私達の家族やグループのみ、なんと贅沢な空間を占領しているのだろうか。

自己申告ラウンド120、ハピにとっては忘れられない初ラウンドの1日となった。
