When you see someone drowning in the same waters you survived

I saw you swimmin’ where I almost drowned
Paddlin’ faster, tryin’ not to go down
Last breath, screamin’ “Please get me out”
Now you're left wonderin’ what to do now

I called to you "quiet", tossed out the line
Hoping you'd hold it like I once held mine
You started to slip like I feared you would
The tide pulled harder than I understood
You feel your grip and it’s slippin’ away
Crashin’ down on you, wave after wave

I see you fallin’ where I once fell
Slidin’ back in and scared as hell
I reach out again, but you’re fading fast
Like the shadows of a love that couldn’t last
Your eyes say “help me” but your hands let go
As fear pulled you down to the depths below

I’m stuck on the shore now with blood on my hands
Watchin’ you drown where I used to stand
Now I whisper to waves what I tried to yell
While you’re sinkin’ deeper where I once fell
