They performed Bolero

The choir of 25 cows sat on sturdy chairs in the field,
Their tails tucked discreetly away,
into emerald dresses with a hemline
Showing their hooves but hiding their udders.

Ayrshire Mary sang like the flute
And said she’d never be milked again
Unless for the sake of a calf.

Tricia Brown Swiss voiced the clarinet
Joining in the building melody.

Gloria Guernsey mooed the song of a wood bassoon
Rich and deep, and her vocal vibrations
scared away the flies;

Harriet Holstein sang oboe, you know,
Like she was sang it since she was
A little heifer

Jennifer Jersey’s voice was the trumpet
Milking Shorthorn Sally of course sounded like the deep bass drum
And Rosie Red & White mooed like a snare drum
For the ongoing building rhythm.

The other 18 I don’t know personally-
They came to sing from far afield,
And the concert included all of Bolero
From the first soft notes
To the crescendo.

Those of us in the pasture stopped chewing the cud
And just listened for awhile, mooing softly;
If you heard someone humming, I’m sorry;
That was probably me.
