(Elements of) western genre

It was May of '97 when we loaded up our wagons and set off for the west.

Just another settler, in a caravan three days long.

The going was good at first, but soon it put us to the test.

Missus Swift, the teacher, had warned us — She'd seen it before.

But we didn't listen, and a river soon claimed five.

Then disease spread like wildfire, and I had to wonder, would I make it there alive?

It nearly killed me, in so many ways, but I beat The Oregon Trail —

With a high score that lasted until I graduated.
