This is pure fantasy, but the wish to have the bear is true. 300-word flash

There’s a Reason for It

“Don’t remind me!” I exclaimed. The room went silent. The group therapist opened her mouth. But Doris beat her to it.
“Don’t remind you about what? We were just going around naming our favorite memories. What’s the matter, don’t you have any?”
I squirmed. “Of course I do, but remembering good things leads to the bad memories that come after.”
“Surely remembering one good memory cancels out a bad one. You’re safe here, try it,” the group leader suggested.
I sat back in my chair, shivering. Would it work?
“There’s really only one way to find out,” reminded Anna in a whisper, which was her normal speaking voice.
I sorted through the good memories. Picking one, I began:
“When I was young and spending time with my great-aunt, I had a panda bear bigger than me. My favorite game with it was going hunting. I would haul that poor bear around by its tail, pretending I had captured him.
“When it started losing stuffing, my great-aunt put it away to be fixed. I never saw it again. When I asked about when they were clearing out her apartment, I was ignored.”
My voice raised with anger.
“It was mine! I could have repaired it!”
The therapist tried to speak.
“I’m not finished! It was something I cherished. Since I am from a family of seven; I had few things that belonged to me alone.”
“Does anyone else want to speak about memories?” the therapist asked.
I stood up, picked up my folding chair and began to beat her with it. The rest of the group either ran or helped me.

“So, Doctor, that’s how I ended I up in your fine psychiatric prison hospital, because I have no good memories without matching bad ones.”
