Summary of this DVD...
'Troubled youth' Jim Hawkins is fast-becoming a source of major stress from his mother and the local authorities. Things seem to be taking a turn for the worse in his life and he's beginning to believe he has no future at all. Then one night, a mysterious stranger crash-lands practically at his doorstep, clutching a simple looking box like its his last chance at life. Being the caring boy he is, Jim brings the alien stranger home as he is obviously wounded--much to the chagrin of his mother. After some cryptic words and mention of the coming "Cyborg", the stranger opens his box and tells Jim to guard the strange-looking sphere he removes from it. As he lays dying Jim, his mother, and family friend Dr. Doppler make a daring escape just as the Cyborg and his crew burn the "Benbow Inn" to the ground. But from the ashes of their inn, or more correctly the strange sphere they carried away from the wreckage with them, lies the keys to young Hawkin's fast-approaching future...
This movie is based upon Robert Louis Stevenson's beloved classic "Treasure Island", trading Stevenson's earth-bound reality for one a bit more "out there" *Smile*.
I especially liked...
the animation. Its the softer side of Disney animation that we've haven't seen in awhile thanks to Pixar Studios. Not that Pixar animation is bad, its just that the change was a nice one. Also, I really liked how each character really suited their voices. Whoever did casting was wonderful!
The cast of this DVD...
did a wonderful job! This is animated, so its even more imperative that emotions shine through vocally. Stars you know like Emma Thompson, David Hyde Peirce, Michael Wincott, and Martin Short offer a taste of familiarity while those you may not know so well by voice alone like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Brian Murray add a new flavor to the mix. Emma Thompson was perfect as the fiesty (and very humorous) Captain Amelia. David Hyde Pierce absolutely shone as the scatter-brained Dr. Doppler. Martin Short as B.E.N. was completely hysterical if not amusingly annoying. Michael Wincott as Scroop was a wonderful pick, his creepy voice always adds a lot to a villian. Brian Murray actually spoke just as I always envisioned "Long John Silver" would. And Joseph Gorden-Levitt was stupendous as Jim. Wonderful talent all 'round
I recommend this DVD because...
its a very cute Disney movie for kids. I'm 15, and I still got a quite a few laughs out of it. So did my parents. Of course it helped that I'm in love with the book "Treasure Island" and also adore David Hyde Pierce. Having an open mind is really the key, I guess. It also, has absolutely stunning graphics in parts.
Further Comments...
This movie was really inventive and just plain fun to watch. Its plot shortcomings turned out to be very minor things in the face of imagery. Its really a shame that so many people never actually watched this film before condemning it.
