This is just how I feel about being black!
I Am Black

Yes I am black,
And that is a fact,

Some people make their own skin color a big deal.
But that’s not how I feel.

It depends on your state of mind,
Not the shade of skin that you find.

Oh don’t get it twisted; I love my ebony brown skin,
And I would never resist it.

I don’t see how people can be racist,
And see other groups of people as faceless.

I was born African American and I love my soulful heritage,
Even the Negro marriages.

From soul to the blues,
To rock and roll before Elvis even knew.

Why are stereotypes made?
Some still exist today.

I am college educated,
Does that make you elated?

I like to listen to rap music and hear the urban floetry,
But I also like to listen to smooth jazz and write poetry.

Why are so many like me in jail?
Some say it’s because the system didn’t fail.

Statistics say African American young men are the trendsetters.
Does that mean if I were dressed like a bird you would wear feathers?

I appreciate my heritage,
But we all need to respect individual’s lineage.

Yes I am black,
But it’s because god made me like that.
