War poem about the moments before "going over the top"
A black hole filled with the promise of death,
An earthen tomb made weaker by the tyranny of men
Words of hope from home-the only comfort here
Then a false dawn and a call to arms
Dum-dum
A nation about to rattle its finest sabre
Dum-dum
A weapon that weighed more than his conscience let him know
Dum-dum
He searched the eyes of men, yet to die, for an answer
Dum-dum
His stomach offered another glance at his last meal
Dum-dum
His heart pounded like the drums of war
Dum-dum, dum-dum
Orders rang in his ears
Dum-dum, dum-dum
The silence rang as loud and for longer
Dum-dum, dum-dum
The shreik of the whistle came and hell descended once more
DUM-DUM, DUM-DUM
Then it was over
