Whispers

Oh no!
They're coming
I can hear them.

Voices surround me
telling me things
in deep, low voices.
A whisper.

No! It's more like a groan
or a mumble, maybe a
snicker. No! It's
a whisper.

I stand there
sweat starts to fall
I begin to shake.

Here they come!
They're in my ears
telling me things
that I don't want to hear

"It's your fault"
"You did this"
"You're no angel"

I cover my ears
and close my eyes
hoping for this to be
a dream.

"Confess...
confess...
confess!"

"No!" I hear a scream
I realize
that it belonged to me.

"No," I say, no a
whisper and then
I hear a snicker.

"Fine, But
you will pay."
a whispers says

I try to be brave.
I put on a tough face.
I snarl at something that
isn't there.

The whispers, they turn to
snickers, then giggles, then
laughter.

Laughter! I can't stand
laughter. That means I'm
humiliated.

It grows louder
and louder and
louder. I cover my
ears

"Stop it!" I scream
my body shaking again,
"Stop it." I whisper, my
voice breaking.

"Just confess."
the whispers say
"Confess and it will
all go away."

"No!" I find myself
boiling, " I did nothing
wrong."

But then the laughing
starts again. Ringing
in my ears.

Even as I cover them,
the laughter is still loud
and clear.

"Confess..." I hear
whispers through
the laughter.

"No..." I say. My body
not feeling certain.

"Confess!" the whispers
are a yell this time and the
laughter grows.

"No..." I say again, my
lower lip quivering.

"Confess! Confess! Confess!"

"NO!!!!" I yell at the top of my
lungs. My voice showing no
breaks. My fear gone.

And then the laughter
and the whispers stop
I hear nothing.

I take in air
and place a hand
on my chest.

I have won.
