It started at six, when he stole a candy bar from the corner market. And it ended at thirty-nine, when he tried to shoot his way out of a bank robbery. In between, he committed numerous crimes, but somehow he managed to get away with all of them. Crafty alibis. Well-planned getaways. Weak evidence. And a lot of inexplicable luck.

He was the type who had a lot of friends. Friends you wouldn't want your daughter dating. Friends you couldn't fully trust. Like the friend who deserted him during that final bank job. As they say, with friends like that....
