The choice is often between memory and forgetfulness.
Perhaps

Perhaps today
your aching,
pretty head
has quietly recanted,
remembered with sweetness
the touch
that I promised,

         or, perhaps,

the golden, muted light
of autumn afternoon
bids you
seek serenity
beyond remembrance,
where even my
smallest breath

         brings trespass.
