Armor of God - Helmet of Salvation
Dear Heavenly Father,
Let this study glorify and please you. Help me to write it in way they will understand and learn something from it. Help me to make it pleasing to the eyes. Give us wisdom. Let this group grow in your word. Let this spiritual meal bless the nourishment of our spirits as we gather to feast on your word. Let others be led and brought to you. May others see your love in us.
In the Righteous name of Jesus,
Amen

Suggested Scripture Memory: Romans 3:19-28

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;
22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:
23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:
25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;
26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.
27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith.
28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

Description of the helmet of salvation

What is a helmet?

A helmet is a piece of armor that protects the head and neck. The roman soldier’s helmet was made from a piece of metal with leather, sponge, or horsehair lining it underneath. Plates would be attached which hung over the ears and face and another plate would hang over the neck and shoulders.

There is a 1st century AD Roman helmet, fashioned from bronze or iron in the British Museum. It was discovered in 1870 and was made of iron, tin, and copper alloy.

What is protected by a helmet?

The head and neck are protected by a helmet. The senses, eyes, ears, nose, mouth, throat, brain, and mind are all found in this area of the body.

Everything we feel, say, and do is ordered by the brain. The brain is the main control center of the body. If the brain is injured, the part of the body that is controlled by the injured part of the brain will suffer too. Physical trauma to an unprotected head always causes damage: some permanent, some passing, but always dangerous. Spiritual trauma to an unprotected mind is even more dangerous and deadly.

A head wound takes a soldier out of battle and possibly his life too.

What is the definition of Salvation?

https://www.google.com/search?q=salvation&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safa...
sal·va·tion
noun: salvation
1.
preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss.
"they try to sell it to us as economic salvation"
Similar:
lifeline
preservation
conservation
means of escape
2.
THEOLOGY
deliverance from sin and its consequences, believed by Christians to be brought about by faith in Christ.

From what are we saved?

Sin

Sin is our independent streak when we determine to live outside a relationship with God.

Salvation saves us from sin in 3 ways:
Sin’s penalty (past) - Justification
Sin’s power (present) - Sanctification
Sin’s presence (future) - Glorification

Death

Death is our destiny when we choose to live outside of the will of God. Satan is our deadly enemy. He is the one who tempts us and is the author of sin. Sin’s penalty is death.

God's wrath

We will face God's wrath with no hope of rescue if we do not repent and submit ourselves to God. This is a story I wrote about a dream I had a few weeks ago. It goes along with this topic.

Complete Salvation

Before we can experience all of Salvation as a whole, we must repent, believe in Jesus, and accept Jesus as our Savior. This begins a walk that is meant to last our entire lifetime.

Romans 10:9-10
9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation

Acts 2:38
Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Complete salvation consists of several concepts:
Forgiveness
Justification
Regeneration
Reconciliation
Adoption
Redemption
Sanctification
Glorification

Forgiveness - God has removed all my debt. We know our sins are forever gone. They are forgiven. This means I can now behave like I believe my debts are paid, so I never again have a reason to feel guilty. I can have a clear conscience.

1 John 3:19-21
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.
21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

Psalm 32:1-2
1 Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
2 Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

Ephesians 1:7
In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;

Justification - God has erased all my debt. This means I can behave like I know my status has changed.

John 10:28-29
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

Romans 5:1-2;8-9
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

Romans 8:1-2
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.

Regeneration - God has given me a new heart.

Ezekiel 36:26-27
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.

Reconciliation - God becomes my friend. Salvation is the beginning of a relationship that transforms us.

Romans 5:10-11
10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.
11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

Adoption - God adopts me as His child. Entrance into God's family is through regeneration. Enjoying the benefits of a family is adoption.

Romans 8:14-15
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Redemption - God owns my life.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.

Sanctification - God is using every event in my life to make changes in my behavior into Christlikeness.

Romans 6:11-14; 18-23
11 Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof.
13 Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God.
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

18 Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness.
19 I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness.
20 For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness.
21 What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death.
22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.
23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Hebrews 10:14
For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Glorification - God removes all sin from the life of all saints at the time of Christ’s return. We await the end of life’s struggles as we know them as we become like Him when we see Him as He is.

1 Corinthians 13:12
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

1 Peter 1:3-5
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you,
5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Hebrews 6:17-20
17 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
18 That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
19 Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
20 Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Why do we have to put on the helmet of salvation if we are already saved?

Salvation is not just a quick one and done prayer and I am saved to never have to worry about it again and go out and live like the devil. Salvation is long lasting. It is a lifelong process. We are saved from our past sins. We are presently saved from our current struggle with sin as the Holy Spirit works in us to make us more like Christ. We are saved in the future from sin altogether.

A good soldier must always be ready for battle.

Philippians 2:12-13
12 Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.
13 For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

What does the helmet of salvation do for us?

The helmet of salvation protects our head and everything about it. Our mind is tied to just about everything we do: faith, worship, and spiritual warfare. The brain is one of our most vital organs in addition to the heart. It is vitally important to protect our minds. The head is the center of our thoughts and knowledge.

Satan knows the value of getting footholds in our thoughts. He can crush our mind with temptation. Satan's realm is swinging the razor-sharp double-edged sword of doubt and discouragement. He wants us to be discouraged and desire to give up. Satan's blows are directed towards the believer’s security and assurance in Christ. Discouragement and doubt are two of his biggest weapons against us.

If our assurance and hope of salvation is shaken, it debilitates our trust in God and sidelines us from battle. Satan wants to attack the sure reality of our eternal life. Losing our hope can be deadly. Without hope, we lose the will to fight.

We wear the helmet to keep our understanding from being darkened and our judgment from being clouded. It protects us from confusion. It keeps our mind steadfast in serving the Lord and helps keep us from sin. It protects us from the arrows of worldly temptation, condemnation, deceptions, and ungodly thoughts.

There are three things we need to be aware of when dealing with temptation.

1. Lust of the eyes = mental temptation. Most sin begins with what we see, think about, and fantasize over.

We can control what we are exposed to on T.V., in movies, in books, in magazines, on the internet, and the music and other things we listen to.

2 Corinthians 10:3-6
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
6 And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

2. Lust of the flesh - usually follows the eyes. Thoughts will translate into action, giving us the impulse of temptation.

3. Pride of life is more subtle. This includes pride and egotism.

Eve fell into all three of these categories when she sinned in the garden.

Genesis 3:6
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.

How do we put on and continue wearing the helmet of salvation?

First of all, remember your helmet of salvation is a gift from God.

Psalm 3:8
Salvation belongeth unto the Lord: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.

God put on the helmet of Salvation.

Isaiah 59:15-17
15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.
16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.
17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

We should keep salvation on our minds all the time. It gives us confidence in our Heavenly Father’s character and power.

We doubt God's goodness, love, wisdom, and power when we focus on our physical circumstances such as struggles with our health, financial difficulties and insecurity, relationship problems, and delayed answers to prayers. As we think about all our sins, failures, weaknesses, and struggles, it causes us to doubt leading us to discouragement, disappointment, and despair. This can lead us to doubt our salvation.

The solution to these doubts, fears, and anguish is to believe the truth of what God has done for us through Jesus Christ. We resist Satan (wear the helmet) when we believe the truth, speak the truth, and share the gospel with others.

Knowledge of Salvation

1. We can not be saved by works.

Ephesians 2:8-9
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

2. Believing in Jesus brings eternal life.

John 3:16-18
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

3. Jesus promises to turn away no one who comes to him.

John 6:37
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

4. Jesus is the only way to be saved.

Acts 4:12
Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

5. No one that Jesus saves will be lost.

John 6:39-40
39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.

John 10:28-29
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.
29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

The knowledge of the truth of salvation through Christ gives us confidence in prayer. We ask things in the name of Jesus as though it were Jesus himself asking the Father because Jesus paid our debt of sin. We should make sure we are praying according to the will of Christ.

John 14:13-14
13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

Our minds are renewed by remaining in the Word of God. The more of God's Word you read, the stronger your knowledge of Salvation will be and the more protected your head will be.

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

We have to replace ungodly thoughts with God-approved thoughts. We have to put on the mind of Jesus.

Philippians 4:8
Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

Ephesians 4:27
Neither give place to the devil.

Our hope of Salvation is found in God's promises. When we put on the helmet of salvation, we have hope that we are and will be saved from eternal death and damnation. It is assurance that God will triumph.

When we wear the helmet, we consciously do not entertain thoughts that are sinful or spiritually harmful. We can't always completely stop these thoughts from happening, but we can stop them from moving in and taking up residence in our minds.

Salvation is not just about us. We need to be aware of others around us too. We should be aware of our safety and the safety of others. If you see someone not wearing their helmet, you should advise them to put it on.

Hebrews 10:24-25
24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works:
25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

In conclusion, we put on our helmet by studying the word of God and growing in the knowledge and promises of our Salvation through Jesus Christ. We only think godly thoughts. We think good and positive and encouraging thoughts. We keep our mind on Christ and what he did for us on the cross.

Jesus is my permanent anchor!
