Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for showing us what it means to produce the fruits of the Spirit. I don't want to miss anything you have for us from this study. If there is more you wish to reveal to us out of this chapter, please do so as we look at it verse by verse. Lead us in future studies you would have us to do. In Jesus’ name, Amen A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump! Galatians 5 1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. 2 Behold, I Paul say unto you, that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing. 3 For I testify again to every man that is circumcised, that he is a debtor to do the whole law. 4 Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace. 5 For we through the Spirit wait for the hope of righteousness by faith. 6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. 7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? 8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. 9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. 10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. 11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. 12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you. 13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. 16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. 24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. 26 Let us not be desirous of vain glory, provoking one another, envying one another. 🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞🥖🍞 Verse By Verse I will study and share thoughts and notes here as well as links to other information such as an online Bible commentary, devotions, etc... 1 Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-1.html We are free in Jesus. However, our own sins bind us. We must stand firm in the liberty we have found in Christ. https://www.icr.org/article/stand-fast-liberty/ I think these 2 links explain verse 1 very well. Christ paid for our Salvation on the cross. There is nothing we can physically do to earn Salvation for ourselves. It cannot be both. I think I like the explanation in this devotional the best. https://www.jesus-resurrection.info/galatians-5.html This Scripture passage adds explanation to this verse in Galatians. It also is what makes me inclined to go along with the above opinion. Our faith is brought about by our response of God's love toward us. 1 John 4:7-21 ▼ 7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-7.html They were doing so well until someone tried to convince them they also had to follow the law of Moses to be saved. 8 This persuasion cometh not of him that calleth you. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-8.html The person or people telling them these lies were not of God. God was the one calling them. 9 A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-9.html Just a little yeast makes the whole loaf of bread rise. Paul wants them to get rid of the yeast among them so to speak before the false teaching spread to the rest of them. 10 I have confidence in you through the Lord, that ye will be none otherwise minded: but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment, whosoever he be. There are serious consequences for luring people away from the law of God's grace. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-10.html 11 And I, brethren, if I yet preach circumcision, why do I yet suffer persecution? then is the offence of the cross ceased. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-11.html This link explains this very well. I don't believe any extra explanation is needed here. 12 I would they were even cut off which trouble you. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-12.html Paul wishes those that trouble them would cease to be a problem. 13 For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-13.html It all comes back to love. (1 John 4:7-21) we are not to use our liberty in Christ as an excuse to sin but are to love each other with the love of Christ. 14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-14.html When you think of all the commandments and laws of the Bible, Jesus summed it up like this, “Love God with everything you have got and love others as yourself.” It is as simple as that. Matthew 22:37-40 ▼ 15 But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-15.html https://biblehub.com/commentaries/galatians/5-15.htm The two links above are Bible commentaries. Below is a devotion about the verse. In some ways the meaning is quite obvious. If you are always fighting with each other and putting each other down, you may very well destroy one another. A house divided against itself can not stand. This is why the unity of believers is so very important. https://www.easthuntsville.com/not-consumed-one-another/ Mark 3:25 ▼ 16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-16.html If our focus is on others instead of self, then we are not pursuing the lusts of our own flesh. We are focused on God first, others second and ourselves last. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-17.html Once again we are reminded that we participate in a spiritual battle. This is why it is important to know your armor God has provide us with in order to fight well. He not only wants us to fight well, he wants us to fight to win. We already have victory through our faith in Christ. Ephesians 6:10-18 ▼ 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-18.html We are under the law of grace when we are led by the Spirit. We a justified in Christ and not the law of Moses. 19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, https://www.bibleref.com/Galatians/5/Galatians-5-19.html Adultery voluntary sexual intercourse between a married person and a person who is not his or her spouse. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adultery Fornication sexual intercourse between people not married to each other. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fornication Uncleanness The condition or state of being dirty: dirtiness, filth, filthiness, foulness, griminess, grubbiness, smuttiness, squalor, uncleanliness. Well, considering this is in a list of works of the flesh and not of the Spirit should tell you there is something wrong with it. I am just going to say this, “If God is not God of everything, then he is not your God at all.” If you have to cast spells in order to manipulate things to go your desired way, you are not trusting 100% in God's sovereignty. You can practice the religions Christianity and wiccan or witchcraft at the same time. However, I would have to question your relationship with God. In worshipping nature, you are worshipping the creation rather than the creator. In fact, the Bible compares witchcraft to rebellion. That is pretty serious if you ask me. 1 Samuel 15:23 ▼ Hatred intense dislike or ill will. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hatred When you think of hatred, it is the opposite of love. Debauchery is excessive indulgence in sensual pleasures. https://reformedhealth.net/do-not-be-drunk-with-wine/ Revellings to take pleasure or wallow. to revel in success. to take part in noisy festivities; make merry. It is not a sin to moderately celebrate success or a sensible party to to celebrate a milestone. I believe this is referring to excessive partying. When I was fresh out of high school, a group of friends I had lived to party. We would go to work and come home and party. We would take turns partying (drinking, smoking weed, etc..) at each other’s homes. We would be loud and carry on. I think this is the type of behavior this is referring to. https://www.gotquestions.org/revellings.html https://www.biblestudytools.com/dictionary/revellings/ 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23 Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.
