Salvation is Given By God
"No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day." (John 6:44, KJV)
The Lord alone can issue this invitation to Salvation. In recent years the compelling aspect of this invitation, which is a command, much like a jury summons, is something we really can't ignore. Reformed Faith calls it, "Irresistible Grace." The interesting part comes in the verse, that follows. When God affects the human's heart, giving the new birth, resistance to this Grace is not something we would ever desire to do.
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3, KJV)
We cannot birth ourselves physically or spiritually.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16, KJV)
Belief is the Gift of God, whereby we receive His Gift of Salvation.
