Notebook Tab
The Notebook tab in your portfolio is a public area where other members can leave a quick note, or scribble, for you to read. When someone adds a note to your Notebook, an email notification is sent to you.

As the Notebook owner, you are responsible for monitoring all content posted there to make sure it follows the content rating you have set for your Notebook tab.

Notes and Content Ratings

When a note is created, the current content rating of the Notebook tab is automatically assigned to the note.

The member who created the note may edit its content rating. However, as the Notebook owner you may only delete notes posted by other members that contain content exceeding the assigned content rating of the note.

Comments on Notes

You and other members can comment on notes by clicking the
Comment link below the message.

Comments must follow the content rating of the note, which is shown in the drop-down menu at the upper-right corner of the note. If a comment exceeds the content rating of the note, it is the Notebook owner's responsibility to remove the comment.

Reporting or Removing Notes

As the owner of the Notebook, you can
Report or Remove a note using the options in the drop-down menu located at the upper-right corner of each note.

Reporting a member will also remove the note from your Notebook and gives you the option to block further notes and comments from that member. This block does not prevent the member from accessing or viewing the contents of your Notebook tab.

Members can also block or ignore another member using the
Block/Ignore Members tool located in My Account / Account Settings.

Notebook Settings

To change your Notebook settings, click the
gear icon at the upper-right corner of the tab to open the manage area.

From there you can:

• Set the content rating for your Notebook tab (see
Access Restrictions)
• Change who can view the notes using
Access Restrictions

Changes are applied immediately, and a
*Check* will appear to the right of the setting when it has been successfully updated.

The manage area also allows you to view reported posts and blocked members using the links provided.

Posting a note to the Newsfeeds

When you post a note in your own Notebook tab, the note is automatically added to the Community Newsfeed and to the Personal Newsfeeds of members who have set you as one of their Favorites or Fans.

You can also post a note directly from the note form at the top of the
Newsfeed page. Notes posted from Newsfeed are automatically stored in your Notebook tab.

Setting the Content Rating of an Individual Note and Using Content Ratings in the Newsfeed

The
Newsfeed may contain notes with content ratings ranging from E to XGC. Like site search listings or the Reviewers page, the Newsfeeds are filtered based on each member's content rating filter setting.

When a Newsfeed is loaded, notes are included or excluded from the listing depending on whether their content rating falls within the current setting of your content rating filter.

You have only one
content rating filter for the site. You can check or change this setting in your Reviews tab (Portfolio / Reviews) between the header and the listing of your public reviews, or at the upper-right corner of Newsfeed.

When posting a note in the Newsfeed, you should set the content rating accurately to reflect the content of the note. The content rating drop-down menu, which defaults to the current rating of your Notebook tab, appears to the left of the Post Note button.

Setting the rating correctly helps keep unwanted content out of other members' Newsfeed listings, so they do not need to hide everything you post in order to avoid material they prefer not to see. Karma rules — it pays to be considerate of others.

How to Set the Default Content Rating for Notes

The default content rating for your Notebook tab is 18+, but you can change it to suit your needs. It is usually most convenient to set the default rating to the level required by most of your notes. However, you should still consider the content rating of each note you post.

If you prefer not to think about the content rating each time you post a note, you may want to set the default to the highest rating you expect to need.

To change the default content rating:

• Click the
gear icon at the upper-right corner of your Notebook tab to open the Manage area.
• Select the desired content rating from the drop-down menu.
• Wait for the swirling circle to change to a
check mark, which confirms the setting has been saved.

The
content rating directive shown in the header of your Notebook tab will automatically update to match the new rating. Click the X in the upper-right corner to close the Manage area.

Posting Notes

To post a note, type or paste your content into the note text box, adjust the content rating using the drop-down menu if necessary, and then post the note.

Each note keeps the content rating assigned when it was created, even if you later change the default content rating of your Notebook tab.

Editing Notes

You can edit the content and rating of a note by clicking the
down-arrow at the upper-right corner of the note and selecting Edit note. After making your changes, save the edit.

If you need to edit the note again, you may need to reload the page first.

Viewing Notes

Content ratings of individual notes are not filtered when someone views your Notebook tab.

How to Check the Content Rating of a Note

Before commenting on a note, you can check its content rating by clicking the down-arrow located at the upper-right corner of the note.

This opens a menu that displays the
content rating of the note along with several additional options.

The menu also includes:

• The
ID number of the note (useful if you want to link to it elsewhere using the note tag — WritingML Help for note)
Edit note and Remove note if the note belongs to you
• The
Save this note / ✓ Note saved toggle button for saving notes
Hide options for notes posted by other members
• The
Remove note option if another member has posted a note in your Notebook

Moderation of Writing.Com Support Newsfeed Notes

Different areas of the site have different content rating limitations. Posting on the Writing.Com Support Newsfeed is a privilege, not a right.

Because posts on the Writing.Com Support Newsfeed are visible to members of all ages, the content must remain
family friendly. For this reason, moderation of these notes is strict.

If this level of moderation is not what you are looking for in a writing site, we wish you the best with your writing elsewhere. Writing.Com has chosen to maintain a more moderated environment rather than operate as an open and unmoderated platform.

Inappropriate comments on Writing.Com Support notes will be removed when found or reported. Members who post inappropriate content may be blocked from posting in the Writing.Com Support Notebook.

If you see inappropriate content in a public Writing.Com Support Newsfeed post, please report it as soon as possible by posting the
note ID number and the username of the member in Technical Support Forum.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What's the difference between my Notebook tab and my Notepad pages?
Your Notepad page(s) and ScratchPad page are private areas of your portfolio which can be used for your notes. Your Notebook tab is a public area of your portfolio where you can communicate with others. Notes you post in your Notebook tab are added to the Community Newsfeed.

Oops! I accidentally reported/blocked someone from my Notebook tab. How do I undo that?
Go to your Notebook tab.
Click on the
gear icon at the upper right to open the Manage area.
Look for these buttons near the top:
View Reported Posts • View Blocked Members

Check both places. Each should have a button that is labeled to indicate that it undoes the action per individual note/comment.
The button for the
View Blocked Members is labeled: Clear this Block

Use the "undo" button(s) to clear the block or undo the report for the appropriate person/note. You will probably get a check mark or a success message, or a confirm box and then a success message.

Afterward, click the
View Reported Posts • View Blocked Members buttons again to close the details, then click the X at the upper right to close the Manage area.

What happens to notes when someone closes their account?
When someone closes their account, their Notebook and all content is deleted along with their account. Their notes will no longer appear in the Newsfeeds. The notes they have posted in other people's Notebook tabs will no longer be visible.
