| Unrest That night, as the monochrome fields lay spreadeagled in the moonlight, the shadows of the trees etched black in sharp relief against the silvered scene, and the stars bright in the frosted sky, an owl hooted, mournful, in the distance and a fox, a low shape dark and loping, merged with the gloom beneath the barn, the farm slept uneasy in its sheets, dreaming of the hooded schemes of thieves. On the far horizon a storm gathered, a cursèd blot upon the rural peace.
