Oh, deep in thy vegetable heart of matter,
what humous thoughts grow thou?
Tomorrow you feed on their rotting flesh,
though they may pluck thee now.
Under a spreading chestnut tree,
this wordsmith found his treasure;
beneath the aged, tangled roots,
lies wisdom beyond measure.

Prompt: Beneath.
Notes: The first verse is over 50 years old, having been written in my youth as a complete departure from my usual style. It was reminded to me by the word “beneath” which made me think of roots and things underground. The second verse was added to justify including the first and as an echo of Longfellow’s poem, The Village Blacksmith.
