The fearful path


My mirrored self once saw I clear
and thought I spied a look of fear,
as if I'd soon rest in a bier.
The cause unclear, the cause unclear.

I glance about. "Who shadows me?
Some evil wight or dread banshee
that waits to spring with dreadful glee?"
No trail to see, no trail to see.

No footprints show by dim torchlight,
no trace of passage left or right -
then leaps a black cat into sight.
Gave quite a fright, gave quite a fright.

Prompt: Clues
Form Note: A monotetra contains four lines in monorhyme. Each line is in tetrameter (four metrical feet) for a total of eight syllables. However, the last line contains two metrical feet, repeated. A monotetra may have only one or two stanzas but, if more are desired, that's fine.
