The Falling God

Analescu, the falling god,
drops forever into the fathomless pit,
every molecule of his being
blazing with bright fire in the darkness,
flames roaring in the wind of his passing,
smiles at you,
invites you to join him
in his eternal descent.

Notes: As a teenager, I read the novel, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, by Hannah Green (real name Joanne Greenberg). I have forgotten most of it, but one enduring image has stayed with me ever since. This is Anterrabae, the falling god, a product of the protagonist’s imagination. I renamed him for my own purposes and mainly because I couldn’t remember his original name. The prompt reminded me so powerfully of Green’s strange creation that I could only write of my own version of the falling god.
